Condemning the Violent Attack on the Atlanta Headquarters of the CDC and Affirming Support for Public Health Professionals

Posted 12 August 2025

The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) strongly condemns the violent attack that took place August 8, 2025, at the headquarters of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta. This appalling act of violence not only endangered the lives of dedicated public servants, it represents a direct assault on the foundations of public health in the United States.

For more than 75 years, the CDC has been a cornerstone of global health progress—leading the response to infectious disease outbreaks, advancing lifesaving research, supporting vaccination programs and safeguarding communities from emerging health threats. The CDC's work is strongly aligned with ASTMH’s commitment to the health and security of people in every corner of the globe.

We stand in solidarity with our CDC colleagues—scientists, epidemiologists, field workers, and support staff—whose tireless commitment to science and public service remains undeterred in the face of threats and violence. Their expertise and leadership are essential to confronting the most pressing health challenges of our time, including tropical diseases and pandemic preparedness and response.

Violence, intimidation and misinformation have no place in public discourse, especially when they target institutions whose missions are to protect health and save lives. We call on leaders at every level—governmental, civic and professional—to condemn such acts and reaffirm their support for evidence-based public health practice.

At ASTMH, we remain committed to fostering respect for science, promoting global health equity, and protecting the safety and integrity of all who serve in public health roles. We urge the public to join us in recognizing the invaluable contributions of the CDC and its personnel, and ensuring they can continue their work without fear or obstruction.
