ASTMH Urges Swift Passage of FY26 Funding for Medical Research

Posted 23 January 2026

Arlington, VA — The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) thanks the leaders and members of the United States House and Senate for their strong bipartisan support of federal agencies and programs that advance biomedical research, public health, and global health as Congress works to finalize the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 appropriations process.

In a challenging federal budget environment, this bipartisan approach underscores the recognition that robust funding for research and public health agencies — including those central to tropical medicine, infectious disease research, outbreak response, and global health collaborations — is essential to protecting health, driving innovation, and maintaining U.S. leadership in science. ASTMH also acknowledges congressional appropriators for advancing regular order and demonstrating that support for science and health transcends partisan lines.

We look forward to the final approval, passage of the appropriations minibus, and urge Congress to act swiftly before the funding deadline to ensure continuity and predictability for investigators, clinicians, public health workers, and the communities they serve.

ASTMH remains actively engaged in Washington, DC, tracking developments and advocating for sustained investments that protect health in the United States and around the world. We will provide ASTMH members with a more detailed readout of recent policy and appropriations developments early next week.
