Posted 22 October 2019

The Society mourns the loss of member Shahid Khan, PhD, an Associated Professor at the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) Department of Parasitology in the Netherlands and longtime Sanaria collaborator, who passed away October 4.

“Shahid was a dear friend and a unique and valued member of the malaria research community," said John Adams, PhD, FASTMH. "His large and gentle personality, dedication to excellence in malaria research and friendship will be missed by many of us in ASTMH."

Anyone wishing to send condolences and/or a picture, anecdote or any other dear memory of Shahid to share with his family, email to: [email protected]

The LUMC posted the following notice of Dr. Khan's passing:

After his studies in Glasgow, Oxford and London, Dr. Khan came to the LUMC in 2002 to join the group of Chris Janse and Andy Waters as a post-doctoral fellow. He started his research on the biology of the malaria parasite and was one of the first to unravel the proteome of the sexual stage parasite. From 2008 he focused his research on the development of a malaria vaccine based on live genetically attenuated parasites.

This research resulted in the first genetically attenuated malaria vaccine that was clinically tested in humans recently, showcasing the prominent role of Shahid in the ongoing and challenging search for a vaccine against malaria. His research group worked closely with many excellent scientists worldwide.

Shahid was original, highly respected and a very devoted researcher as well as an inspiring teacher. We will remember Shahid as an extremely gentle and valued colleague whose fantastic stories and humor will stay in our hearts.

We wish his wife, Christy, his children, Nadia and Alex, and his family, friends, and colleagues much strength in coping with the loss.
