Virtual Meeting Travel Awardees Given the Option to Attend This Year's TropMed in Seattle

Travel Award recipients for the 2020 and 2021 Annual Meetings—when the COVID-19 pandemic forced ASTMH to make the meeting completely virtual—have the option to attend this year’s meeting in person in Seattle, Washington, October 30 – November 4.

Among them is Hasna Riyal, PhD (candidate), at the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka, who is excited to attend her first in-person TropMed.

“I was sad when the '21 meeting went 100 percent virtual but I think nature has better plans for the future,” Ms. Riyal said. “I am sure it will be a one of a kind experience to meet everyone at ASTMH 2022 as it’s my first time. Meeting all the scientists you see only in publication author lists will be the biggest advantage of an in-person conference.”

Nguyen Minh Nguyet, MD, PhD, also is looking forward to her first in-person Annual Meeting. She attended virtually in 2020. “This will be another great opportunity for me to meet other international scientists in person to build my own network, which will support me a lot in developing my research career in the future,” she said.

Travel Award Committee Chair Tracey Lamb, PhD, said attending the Annual Meeting is an invaluable experience for trainees. “It’s been an unusual couple of years with the pandemic but the committee is looking forward to providing assistance to those selected by this year’s travel awardees in addition to those awarded in 2021 and 2020,” she said.

Applications for the 2022 Annual Meeting Travel Award are available through April 6 to all qualified students, early-career investigators and scientists actively working in tropical medicine and global health. Members and non-members alike are eligible to apply, especially those from Africa, Asia and Latin America. Recipients receive complimentary meeting registration, round-trip coach airfare and stipend to offset travel costs.

To qualify, applicants must submit an online application for the Travel Award and submit an abstract. It’s a two-part application process:
1) Apply for an Annual Meeting Travel Award
2) Submit an abstract
