ASTMH 58th Annual Meeting Breaks New Ground
The ASTMH Annual Meeting continues to grow by leaps and bounds. More than 3,400 tropical medicine professionals and students converged on Washington, D.C. in November for the ASTMH 58th Annual Meeting, easily setting a new attendance record, and topping the previous mark by nearly 300 attendees.
From November 18-22, 2009, the Marriott Wardman Park hosted the premier conference in the tropical medicine and global health field, which included a full slate of scientific and plenary sessions, symposia and posters.
The ASTMH community came together like never before in a mission to further our collective understanding of tropical medicine.
Highlights included the opening plenary session and awards ceremony, in which the Society presented its highest honors, and packed poster sessions.

A number of special events were held for students, fellows, residents and junior faculty, including a Student Reception, which provided an opportunity to interact with Society leaders, and several “Meet the Professors” sessions, which offered career development and mentoring information.
Two timely and compelling pre-meeting courses were held Nov. 17-18: “The Intersection of Nutrition and Infectious Disease: Challenges and Opportunities for Studying Nutrition-Disease Interactions in the Developing World” and “The Highly Prevalent Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs): Update on Clinical Aspects and Novel Approaches to Control.”
Departing ASTMH President Tom Wellems delivered a pertinent and engrossing presidential address, “Optimism, Persistence and Our Collective Crystal Ball.”

The exhibit hall featured a high level of traffic as registrants learned about all the latest products and services in the field. Our exhibitors provided a relaxed, friendly environment for our community to converse, network and enjoy.

Mark your calendar now for the 59th Annual Meeting, November 3-7, 2010, at the Marriott Atlanta Marquis Hotel in Atlanta, Ga. Make your plans to attend early for what will certainly be another can't-miss ASTMH conference.
The success of this year’s Annual Meeting was due to the endless energy and enthusiasm of ASTMH members. The Society would like to thank everyone who played a role in developing the meeting, particularly the Scientific Program Committee, chaired by Chris King.
