During the course of any year, the Society inevitably loses a member or two, and the past year has been no exception. I take this time to pay tribute to Dr. Masamichi Aikawa, who died April 13, 2004 (see article on his memorial symposium).

I also was saddened to learn of the death of Professor Peter Perlmann, April 19, 2005, in Stockholm; sincere condolences to his wife, Hedvig Perlmann.

On a less personal note, other important recent news includes:

  • The emergence of avian influenza in S.E. Asia and elsewhere
  • Marburg disease in Angola, where our colleagues at CDC have been playing a vital surveillance and treatment role
  • The announcement of the 13th recipient of the Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal
  • An international team determination of the geographic origin of leprosy

Also, I want to highlight news from the European Commission concerning framework 7, with a substantial proposed increase in their budget. Go to http://europa.eu.int/comm/research/future/index_en.cfm for details.

And be sure to check out the latest society news and conference updates for the ASTMH 54th Annual Meeting, December 11-15, in Washington, DC.

I hope you enjoy this issue of the Tropical Medicine & Hygiene News. Send your questions, suggestions or concerns to me at:
