August 16, 2011 · 2 Comments

Dr. Jill Biden and Dr. Bill FristOn August 16 Dr. Jill Biden traveled to Kenya, where relief operations are underway to help the thousands of refugees affected by the devastating famine in Somalia. Dr. Biden was joined by former Senate Majority Leader Dr. Bill Frist, USAID Administrator Raj Shah and others. They witnessed the effects of one of the worst droughts in 60 years and the resulting famine in Somalia, where some 29,000 children under the age of 5 have died in the past three months. The White House website has a blog entry detailing the visit and www.USAID.gov has information about organizations that are doing life-saving work in the region.

Thank you for highlighting this trip and the terrible famine that is so insidiously claiming the lives and livelihoods of so many. Because this disaster lacks the immediacy of e.g. an earthquake or tsunami it has been more difficult to get the public's attention. I call upon all ASTMH members to do whatever they can to address this humanitarian challenge.

I had a desire to start my own organization, nevertheless I did not have enough of cash to do that. Thank heaven my close friend advised to take the credit loans. Thence I received the college loan and realized my desire.
