Science Speaks: ASTMH Member Kayla Laserson on TB Research in Kenya

Society member and President-elect of the ASTMH Committee on Global Health Kayla Laserson was recently featured in an interview with Science Speaks blog, discussing the CDC's role in tuberculosis research in Kenya. Laserson is Director of the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI)/CDC Field Research Station in Kisumu, Kenya, where she oversees a staff of more than 950 and a comprehensive research program in HIV, malaria, TB, infectious diseases and delivery of HIV care, treatment and prevention programs. Capitol Hill Briefing Focuses on Global Health Innovation, Feb. 28

The third annual briefing on Tuesday, Feb. 28, by the Global Health Technologies Coalition--of which ASTMH is a member--highlights the role of research, science and the creation of new health products in meeting U.S. global health and development objectives. A panel of experts will speak about key policy issues critical to maintaining scientific momentum in saving lives globally.

Moderated by ASTMH Executive Director Karen A. Goraleski, speakers include:

  • Dr. Kevin DeCock, Director, Center for Global Health, CDC
  • Dr. Marc LaForce, Director, Meningitis Vaccine Project
  • Ms. Kemy Monahan, Deputy Executive Director, Global Health Initiative
  • Col. Peter J. Weina, Deputy Commander, WRAIR

The event is at 12 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 28, in the Kennedy Caucus Room (SR 325), Russell Senate Office Building.

Every year, in conjunction with International Women's Day, the advocacy group Women Deliver celebrates the progress made of behalf of girls and women worldwide.

This year, they are spotlighting the top 50 inspiring ideas and solutions that deliver major improvements to the lives of girls and women around the world. The Global Network's submission, "Seeing the End of Diseases of Poverty," has been selected as one of the top 125 submissions and you have the opportunity to vote for the top 50!

Please cast your vote by March 2. The Global Network's submission is number 16 under "Which Health Interventions are Your Favorites?"

Second Annual ASTMH Peru Conference in Lima, February 16

For the second year ASTMH is pleased to announce the Peru Conference on February 16 in Lima, Peru. This meeting will feature Peruvian scientific work presented at the 60th Annual Meeting in December 2011 in Philadelphia. Speakers include AJTMH Editor Joseph Vinetz and ASTMH leaders Alan Magill and Daniel Bausch.
