ASTMH COUNCIL NOMINATIONS

BECOME INVOLVED IN ASTMH...SHARE YOUR EXPERTISE...HELP SHAPE YOUR SOCIETY’S FUTURE...

COUNCIL POSITION INFORMATION
An elected councilor is entrusted by the society’s membership to represent them in determining the direction and overseeing the activities of their society. ASTMH has a paid staff in a professional management firm to implement activities and handle day-to-day administration. ASTMH is a non-profit corporation organized under Section 501 (c)(3) of the IRS code. ASTMH carries Association Professional Liability Insurance (sometimes called “directors and officers liability insurance”) that covers council members.

BASIC COUNCIL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Establish long-term goals
  • Maintain focus on mission
  • Develop policy
  • Oversee financial status
  • Monitor current programs
  • Prioritize activities
  • Consider new programs and projects
  • Provide feedback to staff

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS AND INFORMATION:

  • Candidate is a member in good standing of ASTMH (dues are paid and current).
  • Councilors are elected for a four-year term.
  • There is no compensation for council service.
  • The nominating committee attempts to maintain a council reflective of the interests and diversity of the membership.
  • Candidate must have a desire to participate and contribute to ASTMH's goals.

  • Active role in an ASTMH committee
  • Participation as a volunteer leader in other organizations

SPECIFIC EXPECTATIONS:

  • To actively participate in all council meetings
  • To attend the annual meeting
  • To serve as liaison to one or more ASTMH committees

COUNCIL MEETINGS:

Two in-person meetings are held each year. A full-day meeting is held immediately preceding the annual meeting, and a shorter meeting is held near the end of or following the annual meeting, and a mid-year meeting, usually one full day, is held in the spring, between April and June at a location determined by the council. In addition, there may be special-purpose conference call meetings as needed.

ASTMH will reimburse travel costs (transportation, hotel, minimal necessary incidentals) associated with attendance at council meetings except those held in conjunction with the annual meeting for which no reimbursement is made. An expense reimbursement policy outlines specific details.

It is expected that candidates have their employer's support for the time involved with council participation.

The slate will be developed in the spring, and the election will take place in the summer by mail ballot, with the results becoming official at the annual business meeting held during the annual meeting. Terms begin immediately following the business meeting.
