National Research Council Postdoctoral and Senior Research Awards

The National Research Council of the National Academies will offer competitive awards four times a year for postdoctoral and senior scientific research to be conducted in residence at participating U.S. federal laboratories and affiliated institutions. Areas of research include infectious diseases, parasitology, epidemiology, malaria, enteric diseases, medical entomology, vaccine development and related disciplines. Participating laboratories are:

  • Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), Silver Spring, MD
  • US Army Medical Research Unit, Nairobi, Kenya
  • Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangkok, Thailand
  • US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, Ft. Detrick, MD
  • Naval Medical Research Center, Silver Spring, MD
  • Naval Health Research Center, San Diego, CA
  • Naval Medical Research Center Detachment, Lima, Peru

Awardees design their own projects to be compatible with the research interests of the sponsoring laboratory. Annual stipends for recent Ph.D. recipients range from $47,000 to $63,000, depending upon sponsoring laboratory and are appropriately higher for additional experience. Annual application deadline dates are February 1, May 1, August 1 and November 1. Applications must be submitted online directly to the NRC. Applicants must contact prospective Advisers at the lab(s) prior to application deadline to discuss research interests and funding possibilities. Detailed program information, including instructions on how to apply online, can be found at www.nationalacademies.org/rap.

Johns Hopkins University-led NIH-funded project on the transmission dynamics of Shigella seeks young investigators interested in a career in tropical medicine. Candidates must commit a minimum of four months. Stipend and travel funds available.
